Mark Stephen Chenail has simple down to earth instructions for building a basic house. He makes it sound very doable. Even has a simple way of making a barn.

  9. Is there a simple way to build a house? I don't think it is as easy as 1,2,3.

If you're still in the thinking stage of what kind of design to go for why not try Google Sketch Up? If you're not too familiar with CAD this is a simple enough program that you can draft some designs in. http://sketchup.google.com/

After you've got an idea of what design you want then you've got the hard task of choosing a good architect and a residential building contractor. There's lots of residential building contractors and architects to choose from. You could start by looking through the Yahoo Directory.

  12. I love the smaller houses. Do we really need 3,000 square feet for a family of 3 or 4? You end up spending 90% of your time in about 20% of the house anyway. Kudos on the post.

  15. Love your blog! I too love stone houses. Some recent rock and concrete work I've had to do has rekindled my desire for a stone house. I've done slipform garden walls, but they are more work than just laying up the stone. They also cost more because of the forms; you have to be able to turn two corners and the whole wall in between at once. Then you still have to fix and point the gaps in the wall afterwards. So I'm thinking of building a house just by laying up the stone without forms. I'm going to practice first on a little shed/chicken coop/ greenhouse building and see how it goes first before making a final decision about doing a whole house that way.

  18. What a fantastic idea. :) It may be simple, but it's helpful for people who are looking for plans for their new house. I wonder where he got his inspiration for his works. I like how the living room and kitchen were designed.
