There are many types of owner built homes. I dream of building myself one someday. My favorite is stone but there are straw, cordword and even paper.

More on concrete counter tops
A while ago I commented on how much I like concrete countertops and sinks. I just came across this Instructables where a guy described how he made his countertops.
I am afraid I am not so meticulous as this guy and would not go to so much bother. I don't see the necessity for them to be shiny. And I would build the molds in place, not make them somewhere else and lug them in to the kitchen. This guy, Buddy Rhodes, has built a business with concrete countertops, sinks, fireplaces, etc. and does have some beautiful work. These people cater to the do-it-yourselfer using Buddy Rhodes' molds and materials.

Hi Kitty, I'm a big fan of concrete countertops too (makes sense since that's what I do). Buddy Rhodes does excellent work - poured in place and precast. I’ve taken his class and thought it was well worth the time and money. Most of my countertops are precast because it gives me greater control over the finished product but I'm familiar with poured in place. Feel free to contact me if you want any help or advice; I’m in Portland as well.

I used the fireplace mantle, surrounds and hearths made from pre cast many times. However, I had seen a concrete bar top in a $8,000,000 house. It really looked good, it had a marble faux finish and look great. I like to try to use the counter tops, first on a limited basis and see how they look. Also, how much they cost in time and material to do.
ReplyDeleteI have worked with an owner builder who decided to use concrete countertops. He was so happy with them, that later when he finished his basement, we built his entire bar out of concrete. Its a real popular trend that will continue to snowball.
ReplyDeleteHey dude i don't think concrete countertop will be smooth as granite countertop. It has the best finishing.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of concrete counters. they give you a lot of flexibility too because you can dye them various colors and shine them up. I think they look better than granite when you do that. We're seeing them more often in lofts now.
