Straw bale house
I hadn't done a post on straw bale houses, because they don't appeal to me that much. Unless I lived next to a farm where they baled straw, the expense of hawling them would not be worth it. The bale walls take up a lot of space, and moisture could be a problem unless you lived in a dry climate. This site, Balewatch, has everything imaginable about straw bale houses. Some nice house plans. Be sure and check out the Q and A.

My husband and I are really interested in straw bale houses. However, we have heard from several sources that they cost alot to build. Can you set the record straight for us?
ReplyDeleteAs the straw bale is full of air, it could be an efficient insulator, thus provide some saving in heating and cooling bills. This may offset the initial high cost of building the house. There are probably quite a few other financial benefits to building straw bale houses.

ReplyDeleteI have visited a couple of strawbale buildings and even after a couple of years I can't get over how much they smell like a hayloft. Not bad I guess, but not something I would want to live with day in and day out.

You should give me a call because, I can give you a very extensive answer to this question with Masters Degree in Sustainable Architecture, having done my graduation thesis from Cal Poly State University on Strawbale Design, and designed many strawbale homes. Horst Steinicke arc-planet@gmx.de
